Water Castle

It is located approximately 500 meters south of the Yogyakarta Palace, Water Castle, also known as the Tamansari, is a stunning historical relic. Once, the complex served as a royal garden, recreation area, and meditation area for the Sultan and his family.

Water Castle was built in the mid-18th century with a unique blend of Javanese and European architecture, particularly Portuguese influences. Despite its elegant European design, the building retains its symbolic meaning and strong Javanese influence. This beautiful complex, comprised of swimming pools, water canals, and magnificent private rooms, makes it an architectural masterpiece of its time.

Besides being a recreational park, Water Castle also boasts clever defensive elements. The buildings served not only as a place to relax but also for security purposes, demonstrating the ingenuity of the architects of the past.

Today, Water Castle is one of Yogyakarta's most popular tourist attractions. Although some of its buildings have fallen into disrepair, the complex remains well-preserved and still exudes the beauty and grandeur of its past. Visiting Water Castle is the perfect way to immerse yourself in history, admire the architectural beauty, and experience a royal atmosphere in the heart of Yogyakarta.
