Sedangsono

Hidden at the foot of Menoreh Hills, about 45 kilometers west of Yogyakarta, Sendangsono Maria Cave is one of the most historic and solemn Catholic pilgrimage sites in Indonesia. Its pristine and cool natural beauty, with shady trees and flowing springs, provides a serene and peaceful atmosphere for reflection and prayer.

The name "Sendangsono" itself has profound meaning. The word "Sendang" means spring, and "Sono" is the name of a large tree that once grew there, meaning "spring under the sono tree." Originally, this spring was known as Semagung and served as a resting place for traveling monks.

However, Sendangsono's history changed on May 20, 1904, when a Dutch priest, Father Van Lith, baptized 173 Kalibawang residents at the site. This event marked the beginning of Sendangsono as a center for Catholic pilgrimage. Since then, this site has continued to grow and become an important destination for pilgrims from all over Indonesia.

One form of worship often performed here is the Stations of the Cross, which depicts Christ's suffering. This path winds through the trees, allowing pilgrims to contemplate each station in a quiet atmosphere. Along the path, pilgrims can also light candles as a symbol of prayer and hope. Sendangsono offers not only a spiritual experience but also serene natural beauty. This place is a harmonious blend of faith, history, and nature, making it an unforgettable destination for every pilgrim and visitor.
